Pirelli presents Evans with 200,000 euro prize

GPUpdate

Newly-crowned GP3 Champion Mitch Evans has been awarded his prize of 200,000 euros (£160,000) for the achievement. The New Zealander clinched the championship in a dramatic finale at Monza on Sunday, having seen Daniel Abt fail to win the race.

The funds go towards a GP2 programme for 2012. GP3 was formed in 2010 and its previous two Champions, Esteban Gutiérrez and Valtteri Bottas, are now the respective reserve drivers of the Sauber and Williams Formula 1 teams.

“It’s a very nice prize from Pirelli, which I’m very grateful for,” 18-year-old Evans says in Milan.

“It makes the transition to GP2 even more attractive, which I think is the ultimate step for me. This year has been an emotional rollercoaster and my phone has been going crazy since the last race, so we’ll be working hard in the off-season to put a GP2 budget together. Right now, I just want to soak it all up and enjoy the next few months before testing starts again!”

GP3 will continue when the 2013 F1 European season commences.
