Fans enraged as Ecclestone casts doubt over Monza

GPUpdate

Formula 1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone says that the future of Monza on the calendar remains uncertain, with its current deal expiring at the end of 2016.

Monza has hosted the Italian Grand Prix for all bar one season – in 1980 – but Ecclestone is unsure whether the circuit will remain on the roster beyond next year.

“We have to wait and see,” he said when questioned about Monza’s future. “They don’t have an agreement, a bit like Germany.”

Ecclestone also dismissed suggestions that a Formula 1 calendar without the presence of Monza was “unthinkable”.

“I was told that when we didn’t have a race in France and Germany now,” he quipped. “We’ve got some good replacements, haven’t we?”

Ecclestone also said there were no issues regarding the arrival of Azerbaijan on next year’s calendar – which will host the European Grand Prix – but suggested that a race in Qatar was unlikely.
