Hartley tops first Spa practice before Toyota moves ahead

Stephane Sarrazin headed a Toyota one-two in the second free practice for the second round of the World Endurance Championship at Spa.

The Frenchman set the #6 Toyota TS050 HYBRID’s best time of 1m58.566s during the early running in which most of the leading times were set, which was enough to guarantee top spot by 0.155s ahead of the sister #5 car of Kazuki Nakajima.

The #1 Porsche, which had set the pace in the first session earlier today, was third fastest in the hands of starting driver Mark Webber.

He was six-tenths off the pace of Sarrazin, with the sister #2 machine driven by Marc Lieb a further four-tenths behind.

The #7 Audi was fifth fastest in the hands of Benoit Treluyer, 1.743s off the pace, but the sister machine did not run.

This was because of a failure of the front-axle drivetrain, which the team was unable to repair in time to participate in the 90-minute session.

The new Manor team set the pace in LMP2 for the first time in its short history in WEC, with ex-Formula 1 racer Roberto Merhi quickest in the #45 ORECA, eight-tenths faster than the G-Drive-backed Jota Sport Gibson driven by Giedo van der Garde.

James Calado was fastest in GTE Pro in the #51 AF Corse Ferrari, with the team also setting the pace in GTE Am thanks to Rui Aguas’s speed.

The session was brought to a premature close with seven minutes remaining when it was red flagged because the #50 Larbre Chevrolet driven by Yutaka Yamagishi was in the barrier.
