New Porsche 935 Race Car Unveiled

Porsche has unveiled a reinvented version of the legendary 935 race car, aimed for the track day market.

Revealed Thursday during Rennsport Reunion IV at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, the 700-horsepower car, based on the street-legal 911 GT2 RS, pays tribute to the German manufacturer’s famous “Moby Dick” from the 1970s.

The unhomologated car will see a limited production run of 77 units, in what Head of Porsche Motorsport Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser said is a “birthday present” to Porsche fans around the world for its 70th anniversary.

“It’s kind of a fantasy car but with serious development,” Walliser told Sportscar365.

“Sometimes designing a race car that really looks good, without the [restrictions] of homologation is also fun.”

The car features a 3.8-liter flat-six twin-turbo engine with a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, along with and design elements and styling cues from the Porsche 911 GT3 R and 919 Hybrid LMP1 car.

Historical references, meanwhile, are seen in the cockpit, including a wooden gearshift lever that’s reminiscent of the Porsche 917.

Walliser said the after-hours project has been in the works for the past year, with development still ongoing ahead of deliveries in June 2019.

The car will be sold for 701,948 Euros ($817,311), with the manufacturer expected to select customers based on a series of criteria, including Porsche history, according to the GT motorsports boss.

While no official racing application has been defined, Walliser said he expects to see the new 935 in action at club events and at track days, with technical support provided by Porsche Motorsport.
