Nürburgring 24 Hours: Engel Pole For N24, Gotz Completes All-AMG Front Row

Maro Engel and Maxi Goetz conjured up an all Mercedes AMG front row for the 2019 Nurburgring 24 Hours after a topsy turvy pole shootout that saw 27 cars battle for pole.

Laurens Vanthoor seemed to have the pole in his grasp for a second consecutive year, a first effort of 8:11.567 with cars behind hobbled by a slow zone to protect the crawling #17 GetSpeed AMG of Fabian Schiller down the Dottinger Hohe.

Engel though had other ideas and after a first lap in 8:12.2 he strung together an excellent second flying lap to score the only lap of the session under 8:11 (8:10.910). He’ll claim the Glickenhaus Trophy this year.

Vanthoor meanwhile could not improve on his second lap and would see his provisional pole setting mark bettered too by Maxi Goetz in the #48 Mann Filters AMG, a second effort in 8:11.047.

Vanthoor would retain the third spot ahead of Fred Vervisch in the #4 Phoenix Audi, 8:12.669 would complete the second row.

Matthieu Jaminet would be next up in the #31 Frikadelli Porsche. Row three alongside Yelmer Buurman in the #6v Black Falcon AMG, both men in the 8:12s

The #11 Ferrari would not make the shootout and the BMW challenge never really appeared, the best of the M6 GT3s only 13th, the fastest of the Nissans just 22nd.
