Nick Cassidy has finished fourth overall in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship after a third and fourth placing at the final round at Hockenheim, Germany over the weekend.
Although the Aucklander outscored Englishman George Russell at the final round, Cassidy could not make up the points deficit to claim third overall in the series.
Cassidy qualified fifth, sixth and eighth for the three races at the track which also plays host to the German Formula 1 Grand Prix.
In the first race, Cassidy improved to third, to complete a Prema Team lock out of the podium, behind team mates Lance Stroll and Maximilan Gunther who finished first and second in the championship.
Cassidy was forced to retire from the second race after tangling with Russell’s teammate Alexander Sims while disputing track position.
In the final race of the season he fought through for a fourth place finish after starting eighth.
During the nine round, 27 race series, Cassidy won one race at Zandvoort in the Netherlands and finished on the podium ten other times with six seconds and four third places.
“This was my first full season European campaign after only part seasons previously,” said Cassidy. “ I have probably spent more time sitting in an airplane than racing a car traveling between Japan and Europe, but I have really enjoyed being busy and enjoyed the challenge of stepping between a F3 single seater in Europe and the Super GT car in Japan.”
Cassidy now shifts his focus to the final two rounds of Japan’s Super GT series where he drives a Tom’s Team factory backed Lexus RC F coupe and the season ending Macau Grand Prix for Formula Three.
Canadian Stroll, who won New Zealand’s Toyota Racing Series at the start of 2015, won 14 of the races during the season for a comfortable win in the championship. He already has a development driver contract with the Williams Formula 1 team.
