Lotterer tops Super Formula testing at Suzuka, Cassidy impressive in 5th

Porsche factory World Endurance Championship driver Andre Lotterer ended the pre-season Super Formula test at Suzuka fastest, with GP2 champion Pierre Gasly the top Honda-powered driver in third.

Having topped the times on Monday, Lotterer was again fastest on Tuesday afternoon, heading fellow TOM’S driver Kazuki Nakajima with a best time of 1m35.163s set in the the afternoon session.

Behind the TOM’S pair, Gasly was one of two other drivers able to break the 1m36s barrier alongside reigning champion Yuji Kunimoto.

Frenchman Gasly continued his impressive run from Monday, when he posted the fourth-fastest time, ending up only 0.442s off the pace and the leading Honda runner by some seven tenths from sixth-fastest Tomoki Nojiri.

Behind Kunimoto, rookie Nick Cassidy (Kondo Racing) completed the top five with a fastest time of 1m35.849s – the Kiwi enjoying a far more productive second day after recording the 13th-fastest time on Monday.

Felix Rosenqvist, who last Wednesday became the final driver confirmed to take part in the 2017 campaign with Team LeMans, was 11th fastest on the second day and 1.4s off Lotterer’s pace, while Briton Jann Mardenborough wound-up 16th in his Toyota-powered Team Impul Dallara SF14.
