There are questions being raised over whether Sebastian Vettel should be crowned world champion for the third time, after video evidence emerged from the Brazilian Grand Prix last weekend. Ferrari want to establish whether there is enough evidence to lodge a protest that, if successful, could overturn the result of the Formula 1 world championship.
The footage appears to show Vettel passing the Toro Rosso of Jean Eric-Vergne under flashing yellow caution conditions on lap 4 of the race, just before the green flag zone.
If Ferrari are successful in making a claim to the FIA over the incident, Vettel could be handed a 20 second penalty, which would affect the overall result and drop him from 6th to 8th, losing four points and handing the drivers championship to Alonso, who would win by just 1 point.
Rules indicate overtaking in a flashing yellow zone is forbidden. Drivers in the past have been given a drive through penalty or 20 seconds added to their race time.
Drivers are alerted to caution zones by an indicator on their car’s dashboard display.
