Leitch brothers quinella prestigious Wigram Cup race

Invercargill racing drivers, brothers Damon and Brendon Leitch, have finished first and second respectively in the prestigious Wigram Cup race at Mike Pero Motorsport Park at Ruapuna in Christchurch.

The race was held on Sunday and Damon led younger brother Brendon across the line to complete a family quinella on the feature race of the programme.

Damon was driving the Ralt RT4 belonging to Victory Motorsport team owner Gary Orton. Orton’s Victory Motorsport Team successfully runs both Leitch brothers in the internationally recognised Toyota Racing Series each year. Brendon started the weekend in his father, Barry Leitch’s similar Ralt, but after mechanical problems he was offered Christchurch driver Gary Love’s Swift DB4 which he used to great effect.

Damon qualified on pole for the Wigram Cup race with Brendon alongside and while Damon got away to a good start Brendon lost several places off the line before making his way through the field to chase Damon home, the brothers securing a fine one-two result at the chequered flag.

After a great result in Christchurch the brothers now team up to drive Tony Quinn’ s Aston Martin DBRS9 in next weekends Highlands 101 endurance race at Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell alongside the cars and stars of the Australian GT Championship. The opportunity came about after a generous offer from the car owner while Brendon was working at the circuit recently.
