Stoneman wins chaotic GP3 race, Stanaway 7th

GPUpdate

British driver Dean Stoneman emerged victorious in a crazy GP3 race at a wet/dry Spa-Francorchamps as he beat compatriot Dino Zamparelli and Nick Yelloly to the win.

Stoneman inherited the lead as others fell by the way side during a chaotic affair at the Belgian track, with the chequered flag not waved at the end of the final lap.

The start was delayed as Marvin Kirchhöfer lost control on the formation lap and crashed out, leaving the German a disconsolate figure on the sidelines.

Title rivals Alex Lynn and Richie Stanaway started the race from the pit lane after deciding that conditions were suitable for slicks at the end of the formation lap.

Bernstorff snatched the lead from Ghiotto into the first corner while behind him, Patric Niederhauser took the inside line but erred and slammed into Jimmy Eriksson.

Bernstorff, however, pitted at the end of the first lap, handing the lead to Ghiotto, as those on slicks struggled.

Ghiotto extended his lead over Kevin Ceccon, while further back there was a frantic scrap for position, of which Robert Vișoiu was a part until he crashed out at the Bus Stop chicane.

Ghiotto stopped on Lap 5, handing the lead to Mathéo Tuscher, as the drivers on slicks began to creep back into contention.

Tuscher, however, lost control of his car halfway through Eau Rouge and spun at the top of the hill, before coming to a rest in the middle of the circuit. Remarkably, all of his rivals avoided him while the Safety Car was deployed to recover the stricken car.

Stoneman thus led behind the Safety Car, ahead of Zamparelli, Yelloly and Mardenborough.

At the restart Lynn damaged his front wing while Luis Sá Silva and Sebastian Balthasar made contact at Les Combes, although the marshals were able to recover the cars under double yellows.

After some confusion, Stoneman eventually won, with the top four retaining their positions.

Pal Varhaug was fifth, ahead of Alex Fontana, Stanaway and Lynn. Bernstorff could manage only ninth, while Riccardo Agostini completed the top 10.
