Stanaway claims podium in GP3 season opener

GPUpdate

Red Bull youngster Alex Lynn romped to victory on his GP3 Series debut as he led from start to finish at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain.

The British driver fended off the advances of fellow rookie Marvin Kirchhöfer at the start and eased into a lead which he never relinquished.

Kirchhöfer, whose stall on the grid prompted an extra formation lap, was able to recover his original grid spot and attempted an audacious move around the outside of the first corner.

His approach was unsuccessful and he was forced to take to the run-off, dropping him back down the order.
The race was a fairly processional affair as Lynn stretched his advantage over Jimmy Eriksson and single-seater returnee Richie Stanaway, while Patrick Kujala occupied fourth place, ahead of the previously erratic Kirchhöfer.

Dino Zamparelli was sixth, ahead of Dean Stoneman and Matheo Tuscher. Nick Yelloly and Patric Niederhauser rounded out the top 10.

The majority of the retirements came on the first lap; Brit Emil Bernstorff hit the barriers at turn five, while Roman De Beer suffered a sizeable shunt as he exited turn seven. Carmen Jordá and Victor Carbone also came to grief and failed to make the distance.
