Scott Dixon missed out on a brilliant victory on the streets of Long Beach this morning after running out of fuel with just three laps to go.
Kiwi Dixon, who averages 15th place at Long Beach, the worst of any race is in his career, was leading with 76 of the 80 laps gone before disaster struck.
He managed to head into the pits for a splash of fuel but it was too late to make any further impact.
He rejoined the race but could only claim 12th place as Mike Conway took the chequered flag ahead of Australian Will Power.
Carlos Munoz claimed the final podium spot.
