Seven months after Allan Simonsen’s death in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Danish Automobile Sports Union and Young Driver Aston Martin Racing presented funds collected by the Allan Simonesn Memorial Fund to the late driver’s family.
More than $400,000 was raised for Simonsen’s girlfriend, Carina Lundbye Hansen, and their daughter Mie-Mai, which was made in a presentation last week during the Danish Motorsport Awards in Copenhagen.
The collection was handed over by His Royal Highness Prince Joachim.
“Allan was a safe, talented and reliable driver,” said former DASU President Carl Christian Hansen during the event. “After winning the Formula Ford Championship in Denmark in 1999 he went abroad, first to England and then to Australia where he built a great career for himself.
“In 2013 he drove for Young Driver Aston Martin Racing and, along with Kristian Poulsen and Christoffer Nygaard, began the season with a fine class victory in the World Championship race at Silverstone.
“Allan knew he was taking part in a dangerous sport. But motor racing was his life, his identity, his work, and he loved the sport.”
They were joined on stage by Young Driver AMR team owner Jan Struve, DASU´s Chairman Bent Mikkelsen and Allan Simonsen’s brother Johnny.
Donations to the fund ranged from $10 USD up to large amounts
