All smiles: Invercargill racer Damon Leitch put in a stunning performance at the end of the second qualifying period, setting fastest lap of the session and the day to snatch pole from Martin Rump.He takes pole for tomorrow afternoon’s feature race for the Denny Hulme Memorial Cup.
Leitch, 20, put in a blistering 1:29.626 on his very last lap of the session. He said a session red flag had sent the field out in a bunch and he had waited for a clear space to try for a fast lap – but hadn’t expected to get pole.
“I knew I could go faster, the car was good, but I kept catching slower traffic at the end of a lap or part-way round. It’s hard to get one good fast lap with no traffic here, but that was a great one, right at the end.”
Leitch and Rump share the front row and were the only drivers to break through the 1:30 barrier.
Andrew Tang topped the timesheets in the first session and has pole for this afternoon’s fifteen lap race.
