Felipe Massa set the pace as the opening test of 2014 came to an end at Jerez on Friday. The Williams driver clocked a 1:28.229 to lead former team-mate Fernando Alonso by nine tenths of a second.
Following overnight showers, the final morning in southern Spain was spent on Pirelli’s Wet and Intermediate tyre compounds, with extensive cloud cover and chilly temperatures delaying the track-drying process.
Nico Rosberg was the man in charge in terms of both the timing screens and mileage during this phase of the day, completing the first race simulation of the year – en route to 91 laps – before breaking for lunch.
Such was the extent of Rosberg’s running, Mercedes opted to hand Lewis Hamilton – who suffered a Day 1 front wing failure – some extra track time in the afternoon, when the slick tyre compounds returned to action.
It was not such a positive day for Red Bull, however, with the reigning World Champions ending their test early amid further issues. Daniel Ricciardo amassed just seven laps, giving the team a total of 21 for the week.
As the day progressed further, Massa, Fernando Alonso and Daniel Juncadella traded blows at the front, but it was ultimately the Brazilian who came out on top, turning in his best time in the final fifteen minutes.
Alonso, who led the end-of-day mileage charts with 115 laps to his name, wound up in second position in the Ferrari, with Juncadella, making his testing debut for the Force India team, three tenths in arrears.
Fourth-placed Kevin Magnussen brought the test to a close ten minutes earlier than planned due to the second of two late spins, the Dane keen to put the MP4-29 through its paces as his Formula 1 adaptation continues.
Jules Bianchi took advantage of the Super Soft rubber to place his Marussia sixth, just ahead of Adrian Sutil – the cause of another red flag after a trip through the gravel – and Rosberg, who missed the dry conditions.
Kamui Kobayashi’s Caterham was the fastest of the Renault-powered cars, but he languished almost 15 seconds off the pace, and missed out on the afternoon’s running due to an issue with a power unit component. Daniil Kvyat, who once more had very limited running in the Toro Rosso, and Ricciardo completed the order.
