Michael Schumacher remains in a critical condition as a result of the head injury he suffered in a skiing accident in the French Alps on Sunday morning, reporters have been told following a press conference at the Grenoble hospital where he is being treated.
The key points from the press conference:
• Schumacher sustained an injury to the right side of his head
• On arrival he was in a coma and had intracranial pressure
• A brain scan showed some intracranial haematoma (bleeding) and some cerebral contusions (bruising) and edema (fluid collection)
• Surgeons operated to try to eliminate the haematoma
• They were able to eliminate the haematoma but also found bilateral lesions (abnormalities)
• The doctors do not feel a second operation is necessary at the moment
• Schumacher is being kept in an artificial coma
• He is being kept at a steady temperature (34-35C) and under general anaesthetic to reduce external stimulus
• Had Schumacher not being wearing a helmet “he would not have got to here”
• It is too early for the doctors to give a prognosis
The German, who won the F1 world title a record seven times, has been placed in an induced coma after suffering brain swelling and bruising in the incident roughly 24 hours ago.
French doctors added that he is in an ‘extremely serious’ condition and that ‘for the moment they are not able to express ourselves with regard to Michael Schumacher’s future’.
Specialists confirmed he has been operated on only once – despite some reports he had a second operation overnight.
“Everything that needed to be done has been done and is being done. At the moment we can’t really say what is going to happen, and when he will recover. We cannot answer this yet,” doctors confirmed.
“We are working hour-by-hour. He is in a critical situation. We can say he is fighting for his life.”
Schumacher sustained the head injuries yesterday, and the fact he was wearing a helmet was said to be crucial, as without it ‘he would not be here’ now.
A further update will be made ‘as soon as they feel it will be useful’.
Schumacher’s family are said to be at his bedside.
