It was both lead drivers and co-drivers on-track for today’s second session, Practice One at the Sucrogen Townsville 400.
Alex Davison was quickest with a 1min14.0305 in his JELD-WEN FPR Falcon, while Steve Owen was the fastest co-driver in fourth in the #6 Pepsi Max Crew FPR Falcon, driven by Will Davison.
P1 is for rookies and drivers outside of the top 14 in Championship points. Because the co-drivers haven’t accrued any points this year, they are eligible to run in the session.
Alex Davison had a shocking result at the last event in Darwin and was visibly disappointed at the end of the weekend. The car hadn’t been quick, and he was one of the drivers caught up in the huge accident in the last of the three races at Hidden Valley.
“It’s one we can learn from – and forget really quickly, because it was just a nightmare,” Davison said on the Sunday night after Darwin.
And while it is only early in the weekend – and they were running average tyres on the car – quickest in the session is a positive sign.
“First practice, too early to know too much. It’s early days, we’re not running on good tyres or everything yet,” Davison said after P1.
“We’ll see how it looks in the next session when everyone’s out there, that’s when we’ll see where we’re really at.”
So have Davison and the team uncovered the issue that plagued them in Darwin?
“You always hope so – unfortunately it’s never one magic answer that you find – it’s a whole combination of things which, together, we weren’t doing or were doing. The result is we weren’t doing a good enough job.
“We’ll see how we go today, we’re working hard and as prepared as we ever have been, putting all the right effort in, so it’s not a lack of working hard.”
Lee Holdsworth followed in second in his Mercedes-Benz AMG E63, with Tim Slade, Scott Pye and co-driver Owen rounding out the top five. The highest-placed Nissan was co-driver Karl Reindler in ninth in #15.

At the end of the session Dean Fiore and his crew were seen pushing the Dodo Insurance Falcon down pitlane – but it wasn’t due to a problem, the car had just been released too late in the session.
Following in are Practice Two and Three, with a fourth session tomorrow morning.
