Supersport rider Andrea Antonelli has died following a crash on Sunday. The Italian was riding at the Moscow Raceway when he fell from his bike and was struck by compatriot Lorenzo Zanetti.
The second race of the World Superbike feeder series had started under treacherously wet conditions, with spray reducing visibility for the riders. The fatal incident occurred down the long back straight on the opening lap, with an unsighted Zanetti unable to take avoiding action.
Antonelli was immediately taken to the medical centre, but eventually succumbed to his injuries. He was 25 years old.
As a mark of respect, the second World Superbike race in Moscow has been cancelled.
