Juan Pablo Montoyta, one of the most successful all around drivers on the planet, will not return to the 42 machine under the Chip Ganassi banner in 2014.
The winner of the 1999 IndyCar championship, 2000 Indy 500 and handfuls of Formula One wins will not return to Chip Ganassi Racing next season, as reported by the Associated Press.
The driver moved to stock car racing after departing Formula One in 2006, and with 239 starts and only two wins under his belt in NASCAR Ganassi president Steve Lauletta told the team this afternoon.
His first season with the team, in 2007 saw moderate success with a win at Sonoma, but the team quickly fell apart the following season when Montoya saw two different crew chiefs in the first 16 races.
No word on who will replace the driver has been given as of yet, but speculation leans towards names like Nationwide standout Kyle Larson, as well as Kurt Busch or the new free agent Ryan Newman.
With success in sports cars under the Ganassi banner, most notably this year’s 24 Hours of Daytona, the Columbian could pursue a career in the United SportsCar Series, as his experience makes him an incredibly valuable driver on the market.
