Mark Webber says he cannot remember anything of his massive crash in Sunday’s Interlagos World Endurance Championship race.

The Porsche driver remains under observation in hospital in Sao Paulo following the accident, though a statement on his website said he would return home to the UK “later this week”.

Webber, who described his condition as ‘sore and bruised’, lost control of his 919 Hybrid at the fast Turn 14 kink that leads onto the Brazilian Grand Prix Formula 1 venue’s start/finish start and had a heavy impact with the wall.

“I’m quite sore this morning and am pretty bruised and have got a stinking headache,” said Webber.

“I’ve got no recollection of the accident or how it happened – the team is looking into the details to find out more.

“Thanks to the medical team at the track and here at the hospital who did a great job and are looking after me very well.”

The Interlagos WEC race finished behind the safety car after Webber’s crash, and ended with a first victory for Porsche as team-mate Neel Jani, Mark Lieb and Romain Dumas brought the #14 car ahead of champion pair Anthony Davidson and Sebastien Buemi.

“On a positive note it’s great that the boys in car #14 managed to bring home the victory which is a fantastic way to finish off the season,” said Webber.

“I’m already looking forward to getting out there again next year.”
