Six from six for Conroy in Formula Ford title chase

Lindsay Beer10:58pm 12 January 2014

Invercargill driver Jamie Conroy has extended his lead in the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship after taking a clean sweep at Teretonga Park this weekend. Conroy set the fastest time in qualifying and then took his Mygale to three wins in varying track conditions. He has now won all six races in the championship to date.

Conroy also won all three races at the opening round at Timaru in November and is looking forward to returning to that circuit next weekend for Round 3 of the championship.

Conroy set the fastest time in qualifying on Saturday morning, .365 of a second ahead of championship rival Michael Collins. That afternoon the twenty-two year old got a good start and led all the way to win comfortably by almost 5 seconds from Christchurch drivers, Collins and Ryan Yardley. The following morning Conroy got a slow start from pole position on a wet track and settled into the race second behind Collins. However he was soon looking for a way past and made his way into the lead at the beginning of lap three. A red flag ended the race prematurely after nine laps but Conroy crossed the line ahead of Collins and Yardley again.

The third and final race on Sunday afternoon was held on a drying track. Conroy made the best start to lead the field away and looked headed for another comfortable victory. However as the race entered it’s final stages Collins started to close the gap. Conroy explained later that the tyre pressures had been set higher for wet conditions and the handling suffered as a result. The team had also taped over ducting when it was wet which caused the engine temperature to climb. However Conroy managed to bring the car home to not only extend his lead in the New Zealand Championship but also close the gap to Collins in the South Island Formula Ford Championship title race.

Jamie Conroy’s Formula Ford campaign is supported by Horgan Farms, Evolution Motorsport, Progressive Engineering Southland Ltd, Waikato Milking Systems, Gulf, John Deere, Gallagher, SP Tools, Hydraulink, George Wilson Sales Ltd, Sievwright Auto, PPG, E Hayes, Southern Wide Real Estate, Radcliffe Electrical and R & A Williams.
