Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has officially submitted a bid to take over the Nürburgring circuit, the 83-year-old confirmed in an interview with German business newspaper Handelsblatt.
“We have made an offer and now we must wait to see if it is accepted,” explained Ecclestone. “We believe that we can do more for the Nürburgring than anyone else.
“I’m hoping for a quick resolution – there could be an agreement in the next few weeks.”
When asked if he faces major competition in the race for ownership of the circuit, Ecclestone replied: “There are one or two other interested parties. But we will only pay what we believe that the Nürburgring is worth.”
Ecclestone went on to explain that, should he conclude a deal, he does not wish for the current format of the German Grand Prix to be altered, whereby the Nürburgring and fellow venue Hockenheim alternate each year.
“We were happy with the scheme we previously had in Germany,” he summed up.
