Button excited by Ron Dennis’ return

GPUpdate

Jenson Button believes Ron Dennis’ return will help reinvigorate McLaren after the disappointment of the 2013 F1 campaign.

McLaren’s failings last season are well-documented, but speaking after the launch of the new MP4-29 on Friday, the Woking-based outfit’s 2014 F1 challenger, and when quizzed on the exit of Martin Whitmarsh – something that has still to be officially confirmed it should be noted – the 2009 F1 world champion conceded that ‘sometimes you need a little bit of change’.

“As a team we are very excited about Ron’s role being CEO again. This team was built by Ron in the early days and won multiple world championships. For me, that is the exciting thing for this year,” Button told British newspaper, The Daily Mail. “Last year was a tough year and sometimes you need to see a little bit of change. Ron has that fighting spirit and it is exciting for everyone here knowing that he is in charge.”

“I have spoken to Ron a lot over the last few days. He is very excited about his role and he is very hungry. I don’t think I should say too much – I should leave that for him but he is so hungry to succeed which is great for the team and hopefully we are going to return to winning ways,” JB continued.

Quizzed on speculation that former Lotus team principal, Eric Boullier could be about to move to McLaren, Button said he didn’t know how much truth there is in those stories.

“Obviously, I am not stupid and I know that there are rumours in the press about Eric, but that is all I know and I don’t know any more about the situation,” he maintained. “I don’t really know Eric that well. I know him as a friend. He is a guy I have spent a bit of time with in the paddock but that is it. I don’t know what he is like in the role that he had at Lotus.”
