Bernie Ecclestone has hailed Kimi Räikkönen as the ‘star driver’ of 2013 and has said the way he performed was ‘super’.
Räikkönen missed the final two races of the season after opting to have surgery on his troublesome back, but throughout the year he helped Lotus punch above its weight, and took eight podiums – including winning the season opening, Australian Grand Prix.
The Finn, who will return to Ferrari next year, eventually finished fifth in the Drivers’ Championship with 183 points on the board.
“This year I suppose I have to call Kimi the star driver, with the equipment he had,” Ecclestone wrote in a foreword to the official 2013 Formula 1 season review.
“I think he was motivated on hope that he was going to get paid. He’s a good guy to have in a team, good for us, good for the team. He’s super, he’s a racer.”
