Nico Rosberg delivered a stunning effort during the final stage of Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session for the Canadian Grand Prix to beat Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton to pole position. While just seven hundredths separated the Silver Arrows duo, Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel was over half a second adrift in third.
Amid ever-increasing track temperatures, final practice pace-setter Hamilton remained in charge during the first two qualifying segments, suggesting that a fourth Montreal pole would be a smooth ride.
But Rosberg found another level in the final shootout, breaking into the 1m14s on his opening run before clocking a 1:14.874 at the death.
Hamilton also improved on his final lap, but was unable to prevent his team-mate from claiming the top spot.
Reigning World Champion Sebastian Vettel finished as ‘best of the rest’ in his Red Bull, pipping Williams duo Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa and team-mate Daniel Ricciardo – a quartet covered by less than half a tenth.
Both Ferrari’s also made it into the top ten after positive practice outings, with Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen separated by Toro Rosso driver Jean-Éric Vergne and the McLaren of Jenson Button.
Force India pairing Nico Hülkenberg and Sergio Pérez were unable to avoid falling at the second qualifying hurdle. The pair will line up in 11th and 13th respectively, sandwiching McLaren rookie Kevin Magnussen.
Lotus driver Romain Grosjean, Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat and Sauber’s Adrian Sutil also dropped out in Q2.
Pastor Maldonado was eliminated in Q1, his Lotus coming to a halt shortly before the chequered flag dropped. He was joined on the sidelines by Marussia duo Max Chilton and Jules Bianchi and Caterham drivers Kamui Kobayashi and Marcus Ericsson – the latter causing a red flag with seconds to go after crashing at Turn 9.
Esteban Gutiérrez was unable to take part due to irreparable chassis damage from his FP3 accident.
