Erebus Motorsport has secured a major coup for the future, with pilot Lee Holdsworth today signing an extended multi-year contract with the rising team.
Holdsworth, who scored a memorable maiden victory for Erebus Motorsport at Winton in April this year, has agreed to a renewed contract which will see him remain with the team well into the future alongside teammate Will Davison, who is also signed on a multi-year agreement.
The 31-year-old has been a key part of the team’s development over the past 18 months since Erebus Motorsport’s entry into V8 Supercars in 2013 following the transition from Stone Brothers Racing.
The news comes as timely boost for the team ahead of the final six meetings of the V8 Supercars Championship starting with this weekend’s Sydney Motorsport Park meeting.
“Knowing that you’ve got the right people around you is the most importing thing in any business or sport and I certainly know I’ve got that at Erebus,’’ said Holdsworth.
“I’ve worked with the team for a long time and we’ve been through some tough times but now we’ve seen the light. Seeing what our team can overcome and seeing the attitude of the people there throughout those times proves to me that we’ve got the right bunch of people to be a Championship team.
“We’re still looking for consistency but I’m confident we’re going to find that. I’m looking at the big picture, not race-by-race, and I’ve got complete confidence in the direction the team is heading.”
Despite a tough first 12 months with the fledging team as it effectively developed its package on track last year, Holdsworth has reaped the rewards of that experience with a host of team milestones during the opening eight Championship events this year.
In addition to his win at Winton, Holdsworth has secured five top-10 finishes, also set the fastest laps at the Ipswich 400 and Clipsal 500 and also scored the team’s first ‘one-two’ in practice at the recent Townsville 500 alongside Davison.
Davison has also made headway during his first year for the team with a podium and ten top-10 results as the pair have begun to form a strong combination.
“Continuity in a team is important and with this being Will’s first year, that relationship will only get stronger. Will and I have a very good working relationship – we both know what we want out of the car and are working towards the same thing so it’s great to have a teammate on the same development path as I am,’’ said Holdsworth.
“Knowing there’s going to be continuity here for at least the next couple of years with Will and I pushing each other can only make the team stronger.’’
Erebus Motorsport team owner Betty Klimenko said she was thrilled that Holdsworth would be remaining in Erebus colours.
“I couldn’t be happier that Lee is staying with us as part of the Erebus family,’’ she said.
“He had a tough year last year but he persevered and he deserves every success he is getting now.
“Lee is a great ambassador for Erebus and we’re looking forward to what the future may bring.’’
Erebus Motorsport CEO Ryan Maddison said securing Holdsworth to a multi-year deal was an important factor for the stability of the team moving forward.
“Successful teams in this category are built on the foundation of consistency with drivers, key staff and team members so it’s extremely pleasing to have both of our drivers committing to the team long-term,’’ said Maddison.
“It was always going to take time to become familiar with the equipment last year but Lee has shown how much he has learned from that experience with his results on track this year.
“We’re really happy knowing that we have got two great drivers taking this team forward into the future.’’
Holdsworth will again partner with the experienced Craig Baird as co-driver for this year’s Pirtek Enduro Cup, which kicks off in September with the Wilson Security Sandown 500.
