These days it seems that opening a career mid-teens is measured as a late one, yet it wasn’t until Morgan Haber was 15 that he started on his professional path. That was back in 2008 when he entered into a Karting Championship in Queensland. Having finished in the top 10, his talents were quickly spotted and in 2009 he jumped into the seat of a Formula Ford.
With costs escalating in the category he could no longer remain competitive and he switched to the Suzuki Swifts in 2011 where he once again started chasing down the more experienced campaigners. If it wasn’t yet again for the lack of funds causing him to pull out of the final round, he could have won the championship overall but in the end he would settle for third.
Late in 2011 he was once again given the chance to test drive but this time it was in what is reflected to be the third-tier category of V8 Touring cars in Australia. His initial pace was good enough for the team to enter the car into the 2012 series where he grabbed another third overall on debut. From there the stepping stones continued to fall before him as he was then handed the drive of a tier-two V8 Touring Car for 2013 – the V8 Supercars Development Series.
Now it is 2014 and Haber is keen to continue walking down his chosen path. Last year he made contact with Greg Murphy to talk to him about many aspects of motorsport, he knew that Greg had the experience and knowledge to help him along on more than just the racing. This in turn led to Haber grabbing a test in a V8 SuperTourer with the M3 team. At that time there were no ‘spare’ cars as such but once Paul Manuell had decided to take the season off there was suddenly an opening, and Haber grabbed it.
He is still negotiating his drive in Australia for 2014 in the Development Series, but the team he was with last season is keen to have him back and they are fully aware that any seat time in the BNT V8 SuperTourers is directly valuable to their own campaign back home.
So while Haber is open to say that he is not over here to win the championship as such, there is a high chance – given his career results to date – that he could end up making some big waves on the New Zealand tracks. He will certainly be worth watching as he debuts at Cromwell’s Highlands Motorsport Park in the #15 Holden V8 SuperTourer run by Paul Manuell’s team.
