Lewis Hamilton suffered the first crash of the pre-season period at Jerez on Tuesday afternoon. The Briton, who escaped unharmed, slid into the Turn 1 barriers after a failure on his new Mercedes W05.
Having been the most active driver in the opening hours of the day, Hamilton endured the setback at 12.41pm local time (GMT +1), with the resulting front-end damage likely to rule the team out until Wednesday.
Mercedes confirmed that the accident was caused by a failure, but did not divulge any detailed information.
Witnesses claim the front wing broke off and got lodged underneath Hamilton’s wheels prior to the impact.
Hamilton brought out the third red flag of the day, after technical issues for Kimi Räikkönen and Sergio Pérez.
