Aleix Espargaró edged out Maverick Viñales as Suzuki recorded a remarkable 1-2 result during qualifying for the Catalan Grand Prix.
Espargaró lapped the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in a time of 1:40.546, which put him 0.083 seconds ahead of team-mate Viñales.
Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo was 17 thousandths further back in third, with early qualifying leader Marc Márquez having to settle for fourth.
Andrea Dovizioso placed his Ducati fifth, in front of the other works Honda of Dani Pedrosa, who comfortably progressed from Q1.
Valentino Rossi failed to match team-mate Lorenzo’s pace, ending up on the third row of the grid with Tech 3’s Bradley Smith and LCR’s Cal Crutchlow.
Crutchlow was challenging for a place on the front row with his final attempt of the session, but lost control of his bike and slid into the gravel.
Pramac’s Yonny Hernández completed the top 10 positions, with Pol Espargaró (Tech 3) another to fall from his bike whilst on a much stronger lap.
Andrea Iannone was the slowest of the Q2 runners on his Ducati, after he followed Pedrosa through the opening qualifying phase.
