Álvaro Bautista set the pace as the second pre-season test of 2014 began at Sepang on Wednesday.
The Gresini rider delivered a best time of 2:00.848 to lead Aleix Espargaró (Forward Racing) by just over five hundredths of a second, while the latter’s brother, Pol (Tech 3 Yamaha), completed the top three positions.
Andrea Dovizioso was the quickest of the Ducatis in fourth, with new team-mate Cal Crutchlow ending the day 11th. The Italian placed his works bike just ahead of Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo and Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa.
Valentino Rossi, half a second back on the second factory Yamaha machine, took seventh position, while Stefan Bradl (LCR Honda), Bradley Smith (Tech 3 Yamaha) and Nicky Hayden (Aspar) rounded out the top ten.
Reigning MotoGP World Champion Marc Márquez has skipped this week’s test after breaking his leg.
