Two wins in two races saw Sloan Frost extend his New Zealand superbike championship lead at Timaru International Motor Raceway.

The Wellington rider was impressive taking out both Sunday races.

Only Scott Moir got in front of him for a couple of laps in the first race but otherwise it was all Frost, who also took out pole position.

He has 185 points after three of the four rounds, a lead of 43 over John Ross with veteran Andrew Stroud on 129.

The final round at Hampton Downs has 100 points on offer but Frost appears to have one hand firmly on the championship trophy.

It was the second time this season Frost has made a clean sweep after winning all three races at Ruapuna in the season opener.

Ross finished second in both races at Levels while Moir and Tony Rees also got on the podium once in third spot.

Stroud , who has returned to racing after a four year absence, had to be content with two fourth place finishes.

Frost said he was pleased with his efforts on his Suzuki GSX-R1000 but was taking nothing for granted when it came to the title.

“Hampton Downs is a bit of a local round for me, I’ve had a lot of success there in the past but there is still plenty to do.”

Frost said he had never been on the top step of the podium in Timaru before so taking both races was pleasing.

“It’s a hard track to race it is so tight and not that easy to pass.

The 34-year-old said the heat also made it tough.

If Frost’s form holds at Hampton Downs it will be his first superbike title.

He has been riding in the championship for six years and his best finish previously had been third overall.

Racing was shortened from three to two races for the weekend after Shaun Harris came to grief at the hairpin in the pro-twin qualifying on Saturday and had to be airlifted to Christchurch hospital. He remains in a critical condition.
