One of the biggest races in Australia, the Bathurst 12 Hours, will honour the memory of Allan Simonsen, who lost his life in the latest edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Organisers have created a trophy, the Allan Simonsen Pole Position Trophy, which will be awarded to the fastest qualifying driver. Allan Simonsen raced with an amount of success in Australian GT and V8 Supercars, the most popular race series in the country.

Killed in the opening laps of the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 22, 2013, driving an Aston Martin Vantage, Allan Simonsen was born July 5, 1978 in Odense, Denmark. He was a GT specialist, and a favourite to win the LM GTE Am class on the 90th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, alongside teammates and countrymen Kristian Poulsen et Christoffer Nygaard. His best finish at La Sarthe came in 2010, with a 12th place finish overall driving a Ferrari F430 GT.

The 12 Hours of Bathurst will take place February 7-9, 2014.
