Tom Blomqvist will join BMW Team RLL’s GT Le Mans driver lineup in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship next season, replacing Alexander Sims.
The 25-year-old Englishman will partner Connor de Phillippi in the No. 25 BMW M8 GTE, with Sims focusing his efforts on the ABB FIA Formula E Championship.
Blomqvist’s only previous WeatherTech Championship appearance was at the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen earlier this year, when he subbed into the No. 24 car’s lineup.
He also drove the M8 GTE in three rounds of the FIA World Endurance Championship this season in place of Augusto Farfus.
Sportscar365 reported earlier this year that Sims’ sports car racing future was in doubt after joining BMW i Andretti Motorsport for his first full Formula E campaign.
In BMW’s sister No. 25 RLL machine, John Edwards and Jesse Krohn will return for a second season together.
Zanardi Confirmed in Full-Season Car for Rolex 24
Alex Zanardi will share one of the full-season RLL cars in January’s Rolex 24 at Daytona, co-driving with John Edwards, Jesse Krohn and Chaz Mostert.
The two-time CART champion, who lost his legs in a 2001 accident, will make his Daytona debut using a modified hand-control system on the car’s steering wheel.
BMW Motorsport director Jens Marquardt recently hinted at Zanardi’s inclusion in one of the full-season lineups.
Colton Herta and Phillipp Eng will join Blomqvist and De Phillippi in the No. 24 car for the WeatherTech Championship season-opener.
