Recently-crowned Porsche Carrera Cup Asia champion Chris van der Drift says he is hoping to steer his career in the direction the DTM or V8 Supercars.
The 29-year-old enjoyed a stand-out season in the Asian Carrera Cup, taking seven wins on his way to securing the title ahead of Craig Baird.
While the Kiwi is expecting to race in Asia again in 2016, he told Motorsport.com that he sees both Germany’s DTM and Australia’s V8 Supercars as ideal career outcomes.
“I think there is a high chance I will be back racing in Asia next year,” he said.
“Career-wise, I would love to get involved with a manufacture so I will keep pushing for this. Ideally DTM would be absolutely mega, or to move back to Australia and get a ride in V8 Supercars.”
Fastest deal ever
According to van der Drift, his deal to race in Asia this year came about in bizarre, and hasty, circumstances. And it all started with a barbecue with compatriot Earl Bamber.
“Actually at the start of the season Earl Bamber came around to our place in the UK for a barbecue and a catch-up, and we were talking about the racing plans for the season,” van der Drift said.
“He was saying that Arrows Racing was searching for a driver, and Earl made a
call to the team that night and within a few hours the deal was done. For me,
the fastest ever!”
Well done to Chris, should try and do Carrera Cup Asia next year and try and win back to back titles, whatever he does good luck.
