A spectator has died after a lightning strike at Pocono Raceway during this weekend’s Pennsylvania 400, won by Jeff Gordon.

The strike hit the Raceway as part of a storm that forced the cancellation of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race this morning Australian time.

10 spectators were injured in the strike – with five being treated at the scene and the remainder transported to local hospitals. One was unfortunately pronounced dead. Pocono Raceway has further confirmed that two have been listed as critical with a further two with minor injuries and one with moderate injuries.

The circuit’s statement read:

“Our sincerest thoughts and prayers with those involved in today’s lightning strike at the Raceway. Unfortunately, one of our fans, who was critically injured, was pronounced D.O.A. at the Pocono Medical Center in Stroudsburg. Further information will be available upon notification of family. We ask for our fans to please keep all affected, and their families, in your prayers.”
