New Zealand motorsport ace Scott Dixon’s dream of contesting the Le Mans 24 Hours race has been realised.

The reigning indyCar champion will be in one of four Ford GT’s campaigned by Chip Ganassi at the famous race in France.

“For once I’m the rookie as this will be my first Le Mans,” Dixon said in the team’s release confirming their participation in the June 18-19 race.

“I’m excited to make my Le Mans debut in the Ford GT. I’ve been in the car a few times in testing so I know we have a great race car here. Like any driver, it is a dream come true for me to race at Le Mans, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Dixon will team with Ryan Briscoe and Richard Westbrook in the team’s No. 69.

This year is the 50th anniversary of Ford’s first Le Mans win in 1966 with Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon driving a black GT40.

That was a motivating factor for Dixon.

He faces a logistical test to get to France for scrutineering.

IndyCar’s June 11 race at Texas Motor Speedway ends hours before drivers would be required on-site at Le Mans.

He plans to fly by private jet from the IndyCar race to France.

Dixon opened his 2016 IndyCar campaign with a seventh place finish at the first race of the season in Florida on Monday.
