It is with regret that MotorSport NZ advises the passing of well-known motorsport journalist Eoin Young. MSNZ had recently awarded Eoin with a Historic Heritage Award at the annual Awards Dinner in May. The citation from the award is below which tells the story of Eoin’s passion for writing.
Eoin started writing under the name ‘Dipstick’ in the late 1950s. He was probably the most widely read New Zealander on any subject in history. He left Timaru for the UK in 1961 – a year later he was working for Bruce McLaren and was a founding director of his team. His columns in Autocar started in 1967 and ran for 30 years. Eoin Young lived the dream of so many Kiwis – if you couldn’t drive, design or fix racing cars, what could be better than travelling the world writing about them? Along the way he pushed the careers of many young Kiwi racers.
MotorSport NZ would like to acknowledge Eoin’s contribution to the Sport; he will be sorely missed.
