Marco Sørensen led from lights-to-flag to claim his and MP Motorsport’s maiden GP2 victory in the Sprint race in Russia.
Sørensen led throughout and held off the challenge of Stoffel Vandoorne to take the win, while Felipe Nasr finished in third after starting from 17th on the grid.
Pole man Sørensen retained his advantage at the start as Sergio Canamasas was challenged by Vandoorne into Turn Two. Vandoorne passed Canamasas but locked up and took to the run-off, as did Sørensen, and the Belgian wisely allowed his rival back through.
Sørensen thus led from Canamasas and Vandoorne, while fourth-placed Julian Leal was penalised for track limits, elevating Mitch Evans to fourth and Nasr to fifth after a flying start.
Sørensen headed Canamasas but the Spaniard slowed to a halt with eight laps remaining, giving the Dane an advantage of almost two seconds over Vandoorne and Evans.
Raffaele Marciello ran fifth early on but spun exiting the final corner and brought out the Safety Car when he crashed at Turn Seven following contact with Artem Markelov with five laps remaining.
That left the remaining drivers with a two lap dash to the flag and Sørensen perfected the restart to cruise home, ahead of Vandoorne and Nasr, who passed Evans towards the end of the race.
Arthur Pic recovered from a poor start to take fifth, ahead of Andre Negrão, Kimiya Sato, Stefano Coletti and Nathanael Berthon.
Champion Jolyon Palmer finished outside of the points for the first time in 2014 after he was hit at Turn Two and dropped to last. He nonetheless recovered to round out the top 10.
The final round of the GP2 Season takes place in Abu Dhabi from November 21 to 23
