Rosberg beats Hamilton to Suzuka pole position

Nico Rosberg beat Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton to pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, with Williams drivers Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa locking out the second row.

Rosberg was the fastest man heading into the shootout phase and delivered a 1:32.506 on his final run to beat Hamilton by 0.197s.

Hamilton, whose car was ready to drive just minutes before qualifying in the wake of his sizeable practice shunt, was four tenths clear of nearest rival Bottas, who in turn comfortably outpaced team-mate Massa.

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso led the non Mercedes-powered battle in fifth.

Daniel Ricciardo delivered a fine late lap for sixth, eclipsing McLaren drivers Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button and outgoing Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel, who lost time when he locked up at the hairpin.

Kimi Räikkönen, using an older power unit after his FP3 issues, elected for just one Q3 run and took 10th.

Jean-Éric Vergne narrowly missed out on a place in the final shootout, although the Frenchman had the consolation of out-qualifying team-mate Daniil Kvyat, chosen as Vettel’s replacement at Red Bull.

Kvyat finished between Force India pair Sergio Pérez and Nico Hülkenberg in 13th position, while Sauber’s Adrian Sutil and Esteban Gutiérrez were the last of the timed runners in the second qualifying phase.

Both Lotus drivers were eliminated in the first knockout round as they continued to struggle for grip; Pastor Maldonado got the better of team-mate Romain Grosjean, but the Venezuelan drops to the back of the grid with his 10-place engine penalty, half of which is set to be carried over to the following Russian Grand Prix.

Caterham rookie Marcus Ericsson secured back-of-the-grid honours, edging out Marussia’s Jules Bianchi, who failed to reach the line in time for his final lap, with Kamui Kobayashi and Max Chilton bringing up the rear.
