Verstappen passes medical, gets Torro Rosso FP1 debut at Suzuka

Toro Rosso has confirmed that future racer Max Verstappen will drive at a Formula 1 event for the first time this weekend, when he takes to the wheel during Friday morning’s opening practice session at Suzuka.

Verstappen, who turns 17 tomorrow, had been waiting on a Super Licence after surpassing the mileage total required by governing body the FIA during a private test at the Adria International Raceway earlier this month.

In preparation for the outing, the Dutchman has completed virtual mileage in the Red Bull team’s simulator.

“I am very much looking forward to taking part in a practice session at a Grand Prix for the first time,” said Verstappen, who will drive Jean-Éric Vergne’s car, the man he is replacing at the squad next season.

“For me, it will be a very valuable experience, spending some time in the car and getting used to working with everyone in the team, to prepare myself for next year. I am not going there to break any records, I just want to gain experience. I have spent one day driving this track on the simulator, but it’s no substitute for driving for real.

“My first impression is that it’s not an easy track; for example, it looks hard to get the combination right in the first esses. I have one and a half hours to drive and I’m looking forward to doing a good job, for myself and the team.”

Verstappen is also set for Friday practice appearances in the United States, Brazil and Abu Dhabi.
