Dixon: Nobody had a particularly strong 2015 season

Nobody had a particularly strong IndyCar Series season in 2015, reckons champion Scott Dixon.

The Ganassi driver denied Juan Pablo Montoya the championship in a six-way fight at the Sonoma finale.

Dixon’s tally of three wins was the most of any of the nine drivers to achieve victories in 2015.

Montoya led the championship from the opener to the decider but scored only one podium finish in the final 10 rounds of the season, while Dixon spent most of the year in the top four before his Sonoma win allowed him to snatch the crown.

“It was nice to have one of those years where it rolled your way,” Dixon said.

“The 2007 and 2009 championships we lost in a similar manner [to Montoya].

“To be honest I don’t think anyone had a stellar year this past season.

“Nobody really won a tonne of races or ran away with it for a small part of the season and had everybody trying to roll them back.

“Nobody had a great year. Although there were some standout performances at some of the races, nobody dominated.

“That is why we had six potential championship contenders going into the final race of the season at Sonoma.”

Dixon said his fourth title – and second in three years – was a particularly strong achievement by Ganassi given the season’s open nature.

“Yes, we needed a lot of things to go our way but this team is fantastic at pulling through when it counts,” he added.

“I did what I needed to do at Sonoma and the team did beyond what it needed to do as far as pitstops and strategies.”
