A street race in Providence, Rhode Island, has become the latest candidate to join the IndyCar schedule in 2013.
According to US publication Racer, a 2.1 mile circuit has been laid out in the bayside city by NZR Consulting, which also designed the Baltimore street circuit, with a proposed race date of August 9-11.
“Initially, a potential site was looked at in Boston but as we progressed it was apparent interest was extremely high just down the road in Providence,” NZR Consulting president Tony Cotman was quoted as saying.
“The promoter group will be known as the New England Grand Prix LLC. It includes some folks who are very familiar with IndyCar and some that are new to it.
“It’s important to us to blend and involve the local market as much as possible.
“It’s also important we have someone experienced when it comes to IndyCar events.”
New additions to the IndyCar calendar have been a source of constant speculation during 2012, with at least 24 sites having been rumoured as potential race venues.
The inclusion of Providence would give the series a second event in the north-east of the USA, with Baltimore located 360 miles to the south.
