All drivers were on track for the day’s second Practice session and Red Bull Racing Australia’s Jamie Whincup was quickest, ahead of Fabian Coulthard and Scott McLaughlin.
Early in the session, Coulthard reported issues with the car, but still managed to get within 0.0045sec of Whincup, with a 56.3757sec.
The other two Brad Jones Racing cars of Jason Bright and David Wall were fourth and fifth in the session.
Coulthard reported problems with the car at the beginning of P2, saying over the radio it felt like he was a cylinder down. However, he still managed second and believes the car may be fixed.
“They’re still trying to work out what it is, we’re not 100 percent sure,” he said after the session.
“I think they’ve fixed whatever it was – to be honest I hopped out the car and did my notes, everything like that, so I haven’t found out exactly what the drama was.
“But as long as it’s gone and stays away I’m happy.”
The weekend’s format means there’s another Practice session to perfect the car tomorrow morning before the first of Perth’s three races.
With just 40 minutes between sessions it was a flurry in pit lane after P2.
“It’s pretty weird to think we’re all done by 1.30pm this afternoon – we may be able to go to the beach? I’m joking, we’ve got plenty of stuff on,” Coulthard said.
“It doesn’t matter (the extra session tomorrow), I think everyone’s in the same boat and as long as everyone’s in the same boat it’s pretty fair.”
The third and final Practice session including all drivers will begin shortly.
