V8 Supercars: Season 2014 begins tomorrow

A new manufacturer. New liveries. New driver combinations, and new drivers, for that matter. See it all free, for the first time on-track in 2014.

See them fly, hear them roar and smell the burn as 25 V8 Supercars are unleashed around Sydney Motorsport Park from 9am tomorrow.

The sydney.com V8 Supercars Test Day boasts seven hours running time on-track. A fully-blown test day, drivers will be pushing for improvement and teams gathering critical information to make their mark on the 2014 season.

Ford front-runner Mark Winterbottom raved about the experience fans could have on the test day.

“The test day’s awesome!” The Ford Pepsi Max Crew driver told v8supercars.com.au.

“They have free entry, people can come out. It’s the first time they can see the cars with new paint jobs, the first day you see people like Jack Perkins and people who have swapped teams in their new teams as well.

“I think it’s great it’s free and people can come. It’s a really cool day for the fans.”

And it’s not just the fans who are keen to see the cars in the flesh – ‘Frosty’ said the drivers looked forward to sneaking a peek at the opposition as well.

“The cars look good, even drivers get excited when they see them and competitors’ (cars). You see how they’re going and what the cars look like – it’s always an exciting time of year.”

How will the Volvos go, how will they sound? See the S60s in the flesh as they tackle the 3.93km Sydney Motorsport Park circuit and Robert Dahlgren has his first complete drive of the V8 Supercar.

Perkins and Dale Wood return to the series; Russell Ingall races on; Nick Percat contests his first solo season; and Jamie Whincup challenges for six Championships, which would make him the most successful V8 Supercars driver of all-time.

That all starts today.

For those looking to get up close and personal with the cars and stars, the 12.30pm grid walk is for you. All 25 V8 Supercars will line up on-track, allowing fans to walk through, meet the drivers, take some snaps – and don’t forget #V8SC when posting on social media.

For Winterbottom, the test is a crucial chance to iron out issues ahead of the first point-scoring event.

“I know the areas of the car I want fixed from last year … there’s probably one corner of that track I’ll be testing my car to try and fix the issues,” he said.

“The rest of the track the car will be ok on, but we’re going to focus on corners more so than the whole lap. We’ll focus on where we are weak and fixing those issues.

“You can still get it, but an ultimate lap time – whether you get past us not – doesn’t mean a massive amount. If we can fix the issues we’ve had previously at the first couple of corners that will be a good day for us.”

There will be the question of who is running the soft tyre, control tyre, and worn tyres, but Winterbottom expects everyone will go for ‘greens’ at some stage of the day.

“If you’re quick, you come away more confident than what you are if you go out and stuggle,” he said.

“But at the same time… we could go out there with the same car, do a quick time and walk away a top five runner, but if you don’t fix the issues you have you don’t better yourself.

“We definitely need to try something, and if it works we’ll look good, and if it doesn’t we know we have a good base car to go back to, but it will look bad at the time!

“It’s just about reading the play on the day and sometimes you’re happy even when you’re not at the top of the leaderboard, and other times you’re up there but it’s disappointing, so you’ve just got to read the day and see how it pans out.”

Will your favourite come out on top? Head to Sydney Motorsport Park tomorrow to see for yourself!
