V8 Supercars stars duel it out for the ‘Perfect Pasta’

A cooking school is not the usual place you’d expect to find a group of V8 Supercars drivers in the lead-up to a big race, but Lee Holdsworth, Shane van Gisbergen, Ash Walsh and Jason Bright this morning had the chance to enjoy some of Tasmania’s renowned fresh produce.

Testing their kitchen skills with a ‘Perfect Pasta’ course at the Red Feather Inn in Hadspen, just outside of Launceston, the group was put to work, cooking their own lunch.

Getting their hands dirty in the kitchen took some of the guys out of their comfort zone, as they learned how to make fresh pasta from scratch.

Before hitting Symmons Plains Raceway tomorrow to push his 2015 Championship campaign credentials, Shane van Gisbergen was mixing eggs, flour and oil searching for the perfect consistency – something that will also be required on track if he is to win the Championship this year.

The Darrell Lea STIX driver will be looking for his first win at Symmons Plains this weekend, and with only one podium in 10 starts at the venue, he’s looking to turn that form around.

“It’s good to learn some of this stuff, as I never cook, so I learned quite a lot today. It really made me appreciate how much work goes into restaurants, and how good the chefs really are,” van Gisbergen said.

The drivers were all learning a new skill today, with Team BOC’s Jason Bright looking to take them back to the kitchen at home.

“Lucy (Bright, Jason’s wife) has already messaged me, saying that she hoped I was taking notes, so I can recreate it at home!” Bright said.

“That is what Tassie is all about, and we’re lucky we got to work with some of the best produce here today.”

Lee Holdsworth knows that getting all of the ingredients together is extremely important on the track, and just as important in the kitchen.

“It’s great to come to Tasmania, and having never cooked pasta from scratch before, I always thought it came out of a packet!” the Walkinshaw Racing driver said.

“It’s actually quite interesting to see how much prep goes into it, it was very good to learn, but I don’t think it is my niche, that’s for sure!”

Ash Walsh, in his first visit to Tasmania as a V8 Supercar driver, was enjoying the exposure to Tasmania’s culinary delights.

“It’s a really fantastic way to showcase the local produce from Tasmania, and the Red Feather cooking school. Definitely something to add to the list when you’re heading to Tassie,” Erebus’ Walsh said.

“A little bit left field for us racing drivers, but it was definitely a bit of fun.”

This weekend’s Tyrepower Tasmania SuperSprint gets underway tomorrow, and includes two 60 kilometre sprints on Saturday and one 200 kilometre feature race on Sunday.

Stay tuned to FOX SPORTS from Friday to Sunday for live coverage of the Tyrepower Tasmania SuperSprint. Fans can also follow the action on Ten and One with highlights packages each day.
