DESPITE their desire to race Volvos in 2017, Garry Rogers Motorsport may have no cars left to race, nor engines to use after 2016.

In the latest twist in Volvo’s departure from V8 Supercars, Cyan Racing will not renew its technical partnership with GRM, following the lead of Volvo’s performance car arm Polestar on Wednesday.

Crucially, Cyan say all of GRM’s Volvo hardware – the cars and engines – must be returned to New Zealand at the end of the season.

“Volvo Car Group’s performance brand Polestar is our assignor in motorsport and decisions from this group sets the precedent for our agenda,” Christian Dahl, CEO of Polestar and owner of Cyan Racing.

“This means that we will cease the activities with Garry Rogers Motorsport in the V8 Supercars after 2016 and bring back our engines and race cars to New Zealand after the season end.”

The move appears to leave GRM in a very difficult position with reports suggesting Volvo Car Australia (VCA) has no option but to follow the lead of its parent company and end its support of the Supercars team at the end of 2016.

Speaking to FOX SPORTS on Wednesday prior to Cyan’s announcement, GRM’s Barry Rogers said it was the team’s intention to race the Volvo S60 into the 2017 season and would be able to do so without direct support from Volvo.
