V8 Supercars

Cameron Waters has collected his first V8 Supercars ARMOR ALL Pole Position after playing to the conditions at Barbagallo Raceway in Perth.

The V8 Supercars rolled out of pit lane on slick tyres for the 15-minute dash, determined to register a lap before the rain set in.

Eleven cars recorded times before a red flag caused by Michael Caruso stopped the session with 13 minutes remaining and ultimately ended others’ chances of cracking the top 10.

Chaz Mostert recorded the second quickest time but had a near-miss under yellows as he also ran off on slick tyres at turn one while Caruso’s beached car was waiting to be rescued.

There was a second interruption to the session with David Reynolds also causing a red flag and losing his best lap time.

While the rest of the field pushed on with seven minutes to go, there was no touching the times set on slicks, leaving Waters to his first pole at the same circuit Mostert earned his first last year.

“It was awesome, I’m really stoked to be on pole. Funny circumstances but you take it while you can,” Waters said.

The instruction to Waters from Prodrive Racing Australia was to treat that first lap as an out lap after a pit stop – “no tyre warming … flat out,” Tim Edwards said.

Waters is set to line up with teammate Mostert alongside, with Triple Eight duo Craig Lowndes and Shane van Gisbergen on the second row.

Those up the pointy end of pit lane benefitted, with Mark Winterbottom, Jamie Whincup, James Courtney, Chris Pither, Will Davison, Garth Tander and Tim Slade all recording faster laps before the red.

The Wilson Security GRM team managed to get James Moffat on-track after a quick engine change between session, his Volvo struck with a mechanical issue in qualifying.
