Internationals arrive for Bathurst, but Kiwi cars still stuck in NZ

THE BATHURST 12 hour is nearly upon us! Looming as large as the mountain it is contested atop, what is arguably the most talked about one-off race in Australia is just a week away from kicking off.

Ahead of the big February 6-8 race weekend, some of the shipping containers with cars and equipment for the international teams will be delivered to the Mount Panorama paddock tomorrow.

Bill Gibson from Gibson Freight, the company responsible for the freight and transportation of the overseas outfits, has confirmed that teams with cars already in the country will have containers moved to the Bathurst paddock ahead of next week’s race.

“We start to deliver those cars tomorrow [January 30] to Mount Panorama,” he told AA.

Teams are travelling from as far away as America, Europe and Japan for the once-round-the-clock race. However, it is those closest to home that will find difficulty getting to the race on time.

“We have a number of cars arriving late, ironically from New Zealand which would be the easiest origin point,” Gibson explained.

“We have cars on a ship that at the best arrives [in Sydney] on Sunday so we have got to get them off the wharf, to our terminal, cleared with customs and up to Bathurst ideally by Wednesday.”

Gibson Freight is yet to have a car under its care miss the Bathurst 12 Hour event.
