There will be a festival of motorsport in Feilding from today as the 60th New Zealand Grand Prix roars into town.

The Grand Prix, first raced at Ohakea under the auspices of the Manawatu Car Club, will be the star event in a three-day festival of motorsport at Manfeild.

The festivities will also start tonight with the return of the Manfeild Fireworks Spectacular. The 6pm start gives people the chance to meet drivers, enjoy live music and sideshows, watch displays that include stunt bikes, drifting and classic race cars, hot rod and NZV8 rides. It will be followed by two minutes of fireworks at 9.30pm.

The weekend is also the culmination of the Toyota Racing Series, featuring the brand-new FT-50 class single-seater, along with all the major national championship categories, including the TR86 sports coupes and NZV8s.

The eight-cylinder action is reinforced by the Manfeild-exclusive appearance of F5000 single-seaters and the Central Muscle Cars.

Manfeild’s new general manager Julie Keane said she wanted as many people as possible to experience the prime attractions.

“It’s a massive event, my first grand prix in the GM’s role and everyone in our team has worked extremely hard to provide top spectator value.

“We’ve got a massive international field for the Grand Prix which will be televised for screening in Europe to around 11 million viewers. There will also be coverage in big international motorsport magazines.”

The final of the Toyota TRS series is raced tomorrow, with the NZGP firing off the grid at 3.30pm on Sunday.
