Williams drivers Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa were both feeling positive after Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session for the German Grand Prix.

With Lewis Hamilton crashing out in the opening phase, Bottas and Massa emerged as Nico Rosberg’s main challenger for pole position.

They duly secured second and third on the grid, confirming Williams’ status as the best of the rest behind Mercedes at this weekend’s Hockenheim event.

“We must be really happy with the result we got as a team – second and third,” said Bottas.

“On my lap there were no mistakes. It was a really nice lap, we got everything out of it.”

Massa says his car was not fully suited to the conditions, making reference to his comments after Friday practice that he would be setting his car up with a view to Sunday’s rain threat.

“I was struggling to put the lap together. The car was not 100 per cent perfect in terms of set-up,” he said.

“But Valtteri did a very good lap and I’m still quite happy with the result.

“Our car and the race conditions will be different, so we’ll try and do a very good job tomorrow.”

Threat of Williams grows with another brilliant qualifying result
